So glad to know everyone loves the featured spotlight series! There are a couple of more makers to share with you this week across the U.S.! It has been really fun learning about everyone, what they do, and how they find inspiration (not to mention they are all incredibly sweet.)
Today, let’s meet Kristine Brookshire from southern California! 🙂
Kristine has always loved art. “My earliest childhood memories are centered around drawing and painting. I studied art all throughout school, even majoring in studio art in college for my BFA. I put off pursuing an art career after college to support my husband through law school and then I got busy having babies. Now I’m a busy stay at home mom of a preschooler and toddler twins but my passion for art is still there. I sneak in painting whenever I can – usually nap times, and after the kids go to bed.” For years, she took on portrait commissions by word of mouth but recently joined Etsy and Instagram to gain exposure and connect with the customers. “I didn’t realize how incredibly inspiring it would be to connect with other artists and makers. I’m blown away by the talent that is out there and the friendships that I’ve made.”
Taking on the shop name olive_twig_studio on both medias came from the decision that this would be a journey for Kristine to find her own voice again as an artist. She didn’t know what type of art she would be making and knew that it would change drastically over time, which it has in beautiful ways! “I started with the intent to create nursery art (I think because I was so in the baby zone with my baby twins) with acrylic on wood. I’ve totally moved away from that – into watercolor and subject matter that interests me (and not my children).”
So how did she finally come up with the name? From the bible verse Psalm 128:3. “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.“ She explained, “I hope my children are inspired to see their mom pursue her passion and do something she loves while working to help the family.” Unique, indeed!
But above all, what is the best part of Kristine’s business? Family. “I wanted to contribute to my family financially but it is important to me to be at home with my young kids. These little years go by so fast. I love that I can do what I love working from home. Sometimes I watercolor with my 4 year old daughter and we compliment each other on our paintings. She will roll-play selling me her art, or bringing her art to the postoffice. I love that she pretend-plays “working artist” more than princesses!” Along with supporting the art enthusiasm of her daughter, she can also be found doing mommy duties such as changing diapers and feeding kids, as well as having dance parties and playing play dough! (Of course with a coffee or iced tea to power her through the day!)
Be sure to stop by her shop and check in soon on our Instagrams, @olive_twig_studio and @lilspirations for a loop giveaway featuring one of Kristine’s watercolor pieces and the other makers’ products!
