I’ve never really been a fan of meatballs, probably because the only ones I’ve ever tried were the ones served in school cafeterias. (I know… so sad…) One day, I was looking for a lunch spot and came across The Meatball Shop with some friends. Back in 2010, co-owners Daniel Holzman and Michael Chewnow opened their first location in the Lower East Side. I had heard about it but never actually visited. Now there are 4 locations, in Williamsburg, the West Village, Chelsea and the Upper East Side. I happen to try it at the Amsterdam Avenue location on the UES.
Though the wait is usually long, this time, it was lunch and we were seated within 5 minutes. Greater service, hip and warm atmosphere, what else is next?
Luckily, brunch was being served! Eggs AND meatball served together? Oh my… Things couldn’t have gotten better. What’s fun about the menu here is that you get a dry-erase marker to mark off anything you want. Their choices ranged from brunch style to simple meatballs served in 4 to meatball salads and sloppy joes. I had the “Balls, Biscuits, & Gravy,” served with the breakfast sausage kind of ball. Juicy and flavorful, topped with freshly made mushroom gravy atop the brioche buns that replaced their sold out biscuits. I finished every bit!
My husband and friends ordered the special vegetable side dish and mashed potatoes (super creamy). They also had the single plate of 4 beef meatballs and the sloppy joe. Don’t underestimate these little balls… they will surely fill you up!
Lastly for dessert, I had my first Affogato (Not the most pleasant looking photo though!). Affogatos are usually a scoop of vanilla ice cream served with a shot of espresso. In Italian, it literally means “drowned.” The Affogato served at this shop has a selection of ice cream flavors to choose from, including mint and espresso. I think it was well made and definitely energized me for the rest of the day!
The Meatball Shop was a pretty fun place, and I think it’s a great spot for kids. I will definitely come back in the future (and perhaps try their ice cream cookie sandwiches? Hmmm…)
